What Is the Difference Between an Optical Cable Terminal Box and an Splice Box?

These common devices are typically used in long-distance communication transmission projects where overhead optical cable installation is employed. As a result, there will be communication optical cables left between each optical cable terminal, which are then connected by a square black device known as an optical cable splice box. It is essential that the number of optical fibers on both sides and the type of optical cable match to ensure the normal use of the optical cable in the future. On the other hand, the optical cable terminal box is located at the end of the optical cable and is used to transmit signals to equipment. Each optical cable can be divided into several optical fibers, which are then transformed into a central equipment for transmitting optical fibers and become an optical cable terminal box. Both the splice box and the terminal box are considered the most basic and common transmission media in optical cable transmission engineering.

As previously mentioned, the terminal box and the splice box differ mainly in their physical characteristics, which also results in distinct applications. The optical cable terminal box is a device that connects the ends of many optical cables to each other in the optical switching connection, and its quality directly affects the stability of optical signal transmission. Currently, the common optical cable terminal box has been further adjusted according to the number of optical cable cores and connected equipment. In the event of outdoor long-distance transmission or fiber optic cable damage, the splice box is used to maintain the continued use of the fiber optic cable.

Furthermore, there are differences in the prices of the two devices. The communication optical cable splice box is pricier than the optical cable terminal box. The price of 24 new optical cable terminal boxes on the market is around 30 yuan, while the price of optical cable splice boxes ranges from 40 to 50 yuan. The fundamental reason for the price difference is that the optical cable splice box is connected on all sides and requires fine connection of the optical cables on both sides when dealing with emergency optical cables. In contrast, the optical cable terminal box only needs to weld the inner cable core in the reel, which saves a lot of work in optical cable fusion, resulting in a lower price than that of the splice box.
